Introduction to SQL Server Automation with PowerShell

Speaker: Chris Sommer, SQL Server DBA Paychex

Summary: DBA’s are constantly faced with challenges in maintaining a healthy SQL Server environment. Managing physical resources such as disk space. Deploying database code changes. Performing database restores for development. As your environment grows so do those challenges, and you soon find yourself barely staying above water. Time starts to become your bottleneck and management won’t hire another head count. Your only option is to become more efficient at what you do. Enter, automation. Using PowerShell with the SQLPS module is a very potent combination for DBA’s looking to automate their database environment. This presentation will help get you started at using PowerShell and the SQLPS PowerShell module. It will give you an overview of the PowerShell language itself, and then it will dive right into the SQLPS module for SQL Server module. If you manage a database environment of any size, this presentation should give you an idea of the potential of PowerShell for managing SQL Server. Whether you work in a large environment or a small one there are plenty of opportunities for leveraging PowerShell and SQLPS. The sooner you start to learn the better, because PowerShell is here to stay.

About Chris: Chris cut his teeth in computing and I.T. in the mid to late 1990’s. In 2001 he became more focused on databases on the Unix platform. His first exposure to SQL Server was in 2007 and he has been working on that platform ever since. Throughout his career, Chris has consistently worked with automation. Automation brings consistency, reliability and repeatability to complex tasks. Once he moved to the Windows platform and SQL Server it didn't take long for him to know that PowerShell was something he needed to learn.
